BOBBIE BROWN COVER SHOOT

Bobbie Brown; the iconic rock video girl from the “Cherry Pie” video by Warrant. Most recently she’s been starring on the hit TV show “Ex Wives of Rock,” which just finished it’s second season. We were shooting for the cover of “Rock Thiz” magazine, and had two camera crews taping us for the reality TV series during our day. Photography buffs can check for more info below regarding how I lit this and why.

Bobbie Brown

Having been a huge fan of 80’s/90’s rock bands I was thrilled to get the chance to shoot Bobbie. At the time of the shoot we had two camera crews in the house as well, shooting for “Ex Wives of Rock” reality show.

This was a very simple lighting setup. One strobe reflected into a silver umbrella was placed a bit higher than eye level and to the right of the photo. After makeup, hair, and wardrobe I asked Bobbie to stand in a doorway which had a white wall a few feet behind. Placing her in a doorway with one light to the side created that black and white shadow effect in half the background. Since the light was shining on her face from a slight angle, what you have is the brightest part of her face in the darkest background, and the shadowed side of her face with a lighter background. I love the effect and didn’t want to muck it up with any extra hair lights or reflectors. Sometimes simple is so much better.

After no more than 15 minutes I was sure we had a few money shots in the can. It was difficult to pick, but this was my top choice, and also the choice of the editors of “Rock This” magazine for their June cover. Turns out Bobbie nailed that shot only 9 shutter clicks into our shoot.

Below are some BTS shots from the day.
